According to several technology news sites on Wednesday, security experts Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden have discovered that the latest iPhone and iPad operating system keeps a log of everywhere the user go, recording both the location and time.

According to their post on O’Reilly Radar, a file called “consolidated.db” contains latitude-longitude coordinates of the location along with a timestamp. They said that it appears the collection of data started with iOS 4.

The presence of these data was said to have security and privacy implications. The file was reportedly unencrypted and unprotected, and it exists on any machine the iOS device have synched with.

“By passively logging your location without your permission, Apple has made it possible for anyone from a jealous spouse to a private investigator to get a detailed picture of your movements,” the security experts reportedly said.

There is no evidence yet that suggests that these data is being sent or transferred somewhere. However, why these data is being stored and how Apple is planning to use it is still unanswered.

According to reports, there is no known method yet to stop the iPhone iOS 4 from logging these data.
