According to a report at Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, people familiar with the situation told them that Apple has placed orders for the main components for iPhone 5.

The source told WSJ that iPhone 5 is being prepared for launch any time in the third quarter and possibly be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4; and with an 8-megapixel camera.

WSJ noted that a person told them that iPhone 5 will use Qualcomm wireless baseband chips and another one said Apple’s target is to produce 25 million units by the end of 2011.

On the other hand, iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera and was noted to be using memory chips from Samsung and baseband chips from Infineon Technologies.

“The initial production volume will be a few million units… we were told to ship the components to assembler Hon Hai in August.” A person of Apple‘s suppliers for the iPhone 5 was quoted on the report.

Hon Hai, a Taiwan-based electronic products manufacturer, is being noted be the world’s biggest in revenue and main assembler of Apple products globally.

As earlier reported, iPhone 5 is being rumored to be launched this coming August or September and will not be just an upgraded version of iPhone 4.
