iPhone 4S launch: Apple unveils new iPhone, iOS 5, iCloud and new Apps

Apple unveiled its new iPhone, the iPhone 4S on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, with Apple CEO Tim Cook, leading the event for the first time, along with other key personnel of Apple. The expected iPhone 5 release did not happen, which left some fans disappointed.

As noted at technology news sites, the iPhone 4S was introduced on the Apple event dubbed as ‘Let’s Talk iPhone‘, which was held at the Apple’s Town Hall room in Cupertino, California.

During the introduction, Mr. Cook talked briefly about other Apple products including the MacBook Pro, iPod and iPad, as well as the Apple stores that have reached to 357 stores in 11 countries.

The Apple event was also attended by iOS SVP Scott Forstall, who announced that iOS 5 will be available starting Wednesday, October 12, 2011 and will be for free.

In addition, Forstall mentioned the Card apps which will be available in the US for now and will cost $2.99 for a card within the US and $4.99 elsewhere in the world.

The next speaker was Apple Internet Software and Services SVP Eddy Cue, who discussed the iCloud, Apple‘s music service, which also be launched on Oct. 12 and 5GB will be free for iOS 5 and Lion users.

Apparently, another new app called “Find My Friends” was unveiled, wherein users can see quickly and easily the locations of anyone who shared his or her location over a limited time.

Later, a iPod price cut was unveiled which will also be available in October 12 and will now cost $199 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB.

On the other hand, it was Apple Worldwide Product Marketing SVP Phil Schiller who unveiled the Apple’s new iPhone, the iPhone 4S, which looks similar with iPhone 4 in terms of appearance.

However, the key features of iPhone 4S include the A5 chip which has dual-core graphics and was said to be seven times faster than the iPhone 4, and is compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks.

Apple’s new iPhone also has a new camera, an 8MP, CMOS sensor, which is capable of capturing video in 1080p HD. It also has AirPlay mirroring that allows users to stream anything from the iPhone‘s screen to Apple TV.

Nevertheless, a voice control function named Siri was noted to be the iPhone 4S’ best feature, dubbed as the “intelligent assistant”, wherein users can ask questions using a voice input. Siri can reply in English, French and German, other languages and features will be added later.

As noted by Apple, the iPhone 4S will be released on Friday, October 14, in seven countries including US, Canada, Australia, Britain, France, Germany, and Japan, with pre-orders to start on Friday, Oct 7.

The iPhone 4S prices will be $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for 64GB, all with a two-year contract. In the US, Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint were noted to be releasing the iPhone 4S.

As the event ended, Apple did not mention anything about iPhone 5 which was earlier being expected, but stressed out that the price of iPhone 4 will drop to $99.
