As noted in a post at AllThingsD on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, Apple finally admitted that there is a problem with the battery of their iPhone 4S using iOS 5, affecting its life expectancy.

“A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices,” Apple said in a statement to AllThingsD, with the problem apparently started more than 2 weeks ago.

“We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” Apple added, without noting on what iOS 5 and iPhone 4S users should do for now.

Apparently, complaints started last October 15 when a number of iPhone 4S users posted at Apple Store forum, saying that their batteries easily drain, with some of them saying that the battery charge drops up to 20 percent within an hour.

Others said that between 10 to 15 percent battery loss at night or being barely used and even making calls. Later, even iPad users who upgraded to iOS 5 began posting the same complain.

According to reports, some complainants received calls from Apple engineers but no permanent solution was given. Others were advised to limit the usage such as turning off a feature temporarily.

Based on iPhone 4S specs, it has a built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery with a Standby time of up to 600 hours. For Internet use, it has up to 6 hours on 3G and up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi.

The iPhone 4S also has a Talk time of up to 8 hours on 3G and up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM), with a Video playback of up to 10 hours and an Audio playback of up to 40 hours.

Nevertheless, Apple noted that all battery claims depend on network configuration and many other factors; and that actual results may vary according to actual usage.

Later, it was reported that iPhone 4S Siri is down for some users and outage complaints poured in via Twitter. Some users said Siri became functional after rebooting their iPhones but others say it is still down.
