Rumor has it that Apple will build an iPad Mini with 7.85-inch screen to allegedly compete with Amazon‘s Kindle Fire tablet, DigiTimes, the Taiwanese technology-news outlet reported on December 16, 2011.

“In order to cope with increasing market competition including the 7-inch Kindle Fire from Amazon and the launch of large-size smartphones from handset vendors, Apple has been persuaded into the development of 7.85-inch iPads,” as quoted from Digitimes.

The rumored iPad Mini will be released at the end of the first quarter in 2012 in addition to the iPad 3 which was rumored to be out early next year.

“Global shipments of tablet PCs are expected to reach 60 million units in 2011, of which 70% will be Apple’s iPads. To cash in on market demand as well as market expectations, Apple is expected to release its next-generation iPads at the end first-quarter 2012,” according to sources in the supply chain as reported by Digitimes.

Digitimes also gives a hint that the 7.85-inch panels will be supplied by LG Display and AU Optronics (AUO).

The iPad Mini with a 7.85-inch screen display has been rumored since October of this year and there are reports that Korean LG Display and Taiwanese AU Optronics have already sent samples of their iPad Mini displays to Apple.
