According to Wikipedia, the first IWD was observed on 19 March 1911 in Germany following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, but after 1977, the UN General Assembly invited members to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.

Now on its 100th year, International Women’s Day (IWD 2011) will feature different simultaneous events in over 170 countries around the world including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Kenya, Spain, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Chile, Venezuela, and Philippines, to name a few.

In India, news reports said that Air India will have an all-women crew on its 11 flights in celebration of the IWD 2011, which is their second time to have such an activity.

Incidentally, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on its official website that the observance of International Women’s Day 2011 will focus on ‘equal access to education, training and science and technology’.

Meanwhile, Women’s Information Network (WIN), through its website TheWINOnline.com is inviting all women in America to participate in the ‘The Largest Gathering of Women for International Women’s Day in the History of the World‘.

According to the site, there will be a live streaming of the celebration in 10 US states including New York, Washington DC, Atlanta and others, with the theme ‘Women Helping Women Worldwide‘.
