The tsunami, brought about by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Sumatra Indonesia, has killed 23 people, 167 are still missing and left many people homeless. The earthquake occurred at 13 miles (20km) under the ocean floor near the Mentawai islands. The tsunami washed away ten villages in the island. Included in the missing bodies are some Australian group of surfers who was in a surfing charter boat when the earthquake struck.

Indonesian and Australian officials are coordinating with the search and rescue operation. However, the joint operations are getting more difficult because of bad weather in the area. Helicopters and boats are having a hard time scouring the affected area due to heavy rains.
