Illinois Election Results 2010: Mark Kirk wins Senate seat over Alexi Giannoulias

Republican Candidate Mark Kirk won the senate seat over Democrat Alexi Giannoulias by a mere 2%. President Obama, a Democrat, was the former Senator of Illinois. The Democratic Party have suffered a string of defeats in the 2010 US Midterm Elections as the Republicans took control of the House. The Democrats have won the Senate by just 5 seats. As of posting 99 percent of the votes have counted, and Congressman Kirk is leading with 48.4% of the votes against Democrat Alexi Giannoulias with 46.1%.

During his victory speech, Congressman Kirk was quoted that “A tsunami just hit the heartland.”

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was quoted by AP as saying, “When President Obama’s home state rejects the past 18 months of his presidency and elects Mark Kirk, a fiscal conservative, to his old Senate seat, it should send shock waves through the White House.”

Giannoulias got majority of the votes from Chicago. He concedes with an emotional speech with all praises to his competitor.

Congressman Kirk surprised many with his win in the Illinois’s Tenth Congressional District. It is believed that his moderate views on issues such as abortion and gay rights has carried him through.
