According to local news on Wednesday, November 23, 2011, Bohol Rep. Rene Lopez Relampagos recently filed House Bill (HB) 5422 changing EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue.

“It would be but a fitting tribute to former President Corazon Aquino, woman of courage and valor, that EDSA — an avenue that became testament to the country’s love of democracy, be named after her,” Relampagos was quoted while explaining why HB 5422 should be passed.

Corazon C. Aquino, mother of incumbent President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III (PNoy) and wife of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., is the 11th President of the Philippines and the first woman to lead the country. She passed away on August 1, 2009 at the age of 76.

Mrs. Aquino, also known as ‘Tita Cory‘, succeeded the late President Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled the country for over 20 years, after 1986 People Power Revolution and served as an inspiration to a lot of Filipinos.

The so-called People Power 1 was highlighted at EDSA, which serves as a main highway in Metro Manila, and was recognized worldwide for being a peaceful revolution to change the leadership of a nation.

If approved, the bill will effectively calls for the repeal of Republic Act 2140, which renamed the 24-kilometer highway after Filipino historian Epifanio de los Santos, which was once called Highway 54.
