As shown at CNN that day, President Obama visited Myanmar (also known as Burma), and praised the courage of fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi on his speech. Mrs. Clinton was spotted sitting beside her as they listen to Obama‘s speech, nodding but later appeared to be sleeping.
“So today, I’ve come to keep my promise and extend the hand of friendship.” President Obama said on his speech at University of Yangon in Rangoon, at around 2:30 in the afternoon (local time.), which is about 3 a.m. in the US. This is the first time that a sitting US president has ever visited Myanmar and Cambodia.
“When I took office as President, I sent a message to those governments who ruled by fear. I said, in my inauguration address, ‘We will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.'” Mr. Obama added, who also met with Myanmar President Thein Sein earlier.
“That’s why I’m here. That’s why I came to Rangoon. That’s why what happens here is so important, not only to this region but to the world, because you’re taking to the journey that has the potential to inspire so many people.” The president said later, with the CNN camera showing Mrs. Clinton with her eyes closed.
Apparently, some observers went to Twitter and posted their comments about the so-called “Clinton falls asleep” video. Some of them noted that Obama‘s speech is worth the sleep, while others defended Secretary Clinton, saying the she may be tired and find it hard to adjust with the different time zone in Myanmar.
