Heidi the cross-eyed opossum which became famous online and offline passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, according to international news reports on that day.

“The cross-eyed opossum Heidi has closed her eyes for ever,” according to the zoo officials in Leipzig, eastern Germany in a statement which confirmed the incident.

The three-and-a-half-year-old opossum was said to have health problems and was treated for a week. Heidi reportedly suffered badly from arthritis and can hardly moved. Zoo officials decided to put Heidi down and putting her to sleep was said to be the kindest option to spare the animal from further pain and suffering.

“This illness has made it painful for her to move over the last couple of weeks and Heidi was treated with vitamins and other medicine. Following a short-lived improvement of her condition, her general state of health deteriorated over the last days despite continuous efforts by the veterinarians. We carried out every possible test and treatment. We made the final decision to relieve the animal from suffering and pain,” zoo director Joerg Junhold said in a statement.

Heidi was presented to the public in December 2010 and attracted more than 300,000 fans on Facebook across the globe.
