Activision Blizzard announced on its 2010 financial report that it will “disband Activision Publishing‘s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.” This is due to the continued declines in the music genre. This will result in laying off about 500 members of the Guitar Hero team, according to reports.

According to GamePro, Activision will continue to develop new downloadable content for Guitar Hero such as new songs for some time. However, nobody knows for how long.

Guitar Hero was first published in 2005. Players use a guitar-shaped controller to simulate playing guitar across several rock music songs. The Guitar Hero series has sold more than 25 million units worldwide, earning $2 billion.
