Ground Turkey Recall: Cargill Recalls Ground Turkey Linked To Salmonella Outbreak

Ground turkey is being recalled by Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation which was believed to have been contaminated with a multi-drug resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture‘s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on August 3, 2011.

The ground turkey recall is being linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak which infected a total of 79 persons. It has been reported from 26 states between March 1 and August 3, 2011.

Approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey products are being voluntarily recalled by the company under the establishment number “P-963” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Meanwhile, all ground turkey production have been suspended and will not resume until the source can be pinpointed and actions to address it are taken, according to Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill’s turkey processing business in a statement.

Furthermore, all consumers who may have purchased the products are requested by the company to return them to the point-of-purchase.
