Two ground beef recall cases have prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct an investigation, after 16 people from 5 US states have been infected by Salmonella virus. These recalls were from Michigan retailers, Gab Halal Foods and Jouni Meats, Inc., as announced last week.

“CDC investigates outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to ground beef. Find out how to protect yourself!” CDC (@CDCgov) tweeted on Monday, January 28, including a link to their January 25 report about their Salmonella outbreak investigation, noting that the patients came from Arizona (1), Illinois (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (9), and Wisconsin (3).
According to CDC, 53% of ill persons have been hospitalized, with no reported casualties. Seven of them were reported to have eaten a raw ground beef dish at the same restaurant before they got sick. The unnamed restaurant is serving their customers the raw beef that was bought from the two retailers.
Last Thursday, January 24, a report at the official website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture‘s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the ground beef recall made by Jouni Meats, Inc., wherein approximately 500 pounds of ground beef products are being recalled.
The next day, FSIS announced another ground beef recall and this time by Gab Halal Foods, affecting around 500 pounds of ground beef products. Just like the ground beef from Jouni Meats, they were directly sold to customers without label and were distributed to the same restaurant in Macomb County, Michigan.
Both products were produced starting December 4, 2012, but the end production date of the ground beef from Jouni Meats is December 9, while the end production date for Gab Halal Foods is December 10. FSIS noted that they have determined that the Salmonella outbreak is linked with the recalled products of both retailers.

Berry, who can be reached by calling (248) 879-0927. In both cases, the public is also being invited to visit FSIS.gov.
