A giant oarfish carcass measuring about 18-foot in length was found off Toyon Bay in Southern California on Sunday, October 13, 2013.

Catalina Island Marine Institute instructor Jasmine Santana reportedly discovered the giant oarfish.

According to earlier reports, the giant oarfish carcass remained intact and needed around 15 individual to take it out of the water.

This is not the first time that a long oarfish was found in California. A 22-foot-long oarfish was discovered along the sand in Newport Beach, California in 1901. In 2006 and last year a 15-foot oarfish was seen in the Big Fisherman’s Cove island and Baja California resort city of Cabo San Lucas.

An oarfish, with a large saucer-shaped eyes, can reach more than 50-feet-long at 1,500 to 3,000 feet below sea level.
