An 18-pound American giant lobster has found a safe home at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, according to reports by several international news sites, August 18, 2011.

Based on reports, the giant lobster, which is more than 70 years old, was caught off the coast of Canada. It was shipped by air freight to San Francisco, where a local distributor decided that the giant lobster deserved to be seen by people around the world.

Recent reports also mentioned that one facility posted an ad on the International Forum of Professional Aquarists, and got noticed by the New York Aquarium.

“When we saw that ad for an 18-pound American lobster, we knew we had to have it,” Jon Forrest Dohlin, WCS Vice President and Director of the New York Aquarium said in a statement.

“He’s a magnificent creature that has been delighting our guests since his arrival”, Dohlin added.

According to reports, the lobster is the largest of its species ever to live at the New York Aquarium. It was housed in the Sea Cliffs exhibit along with walruses and sea lions and eats almost three-quarters of a pound of shrimp and fish every day.

Reports also mentioned that the largest recorded lobster by the Guinness World Records organization weighed 44 pounds and 6 ounces and more than 180 years old. The lobster was caught in 1977 off the coast of Nova Scotia.
