According to a post by Guinness World Records (GWR) on its official website on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, Garrett McNamara, who caught a 78-foot wave last November in Nazare, Portugal, is now holding the record for surfing the largest wave ever.

As noted in the report, McNamara was towed into the wave from a jetski when he made his record-breaking surf ride, which is over a foot higher than the record set by Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank in southern California back in 2008.

“It’s the most challenging, dangerous wave I’ve ever surfed – it’s the only place in the world in which a giant canyon reaches all the way to the beach”. McNamara was quoted at, talking about his 78-foot wave surfing.

McNamara, 44, also won the Biggest Wave Award during the 2012 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards night held in last week in Anaheim, California; and Nazare Mayor Jorge Barroso was among those who congratulated him.

“It’s amazing we get to do what we do, I am so grateful. The world record doesn’t mean as much to me — this is for the town of Nazare and Portugal and for all my family and friends there.” McNamara was quoted on his official website when he was on stage receiving the award.

“To be able to give them something to be proud of and inspire them, a world record for this town doing it tough in the middle of nowhere is great.” McNamara added, who also received $15,000 along with his Biggest Wave Award trophy.
