Fried Bubble Gum wins Most Creative new food at Big Tex Choice Awards 2011 (Video)

The food called Fried Bubble Gum won Most Creative dish at the Big Tex Choice Awards 2011 in Dallas, Texas on Monday, September 4, 2011, as shown in the news video below.

According to various US news sites that day, Fried Bubble Gum was awarded as the Most Creative new food in the said competition, which was prepared by Justin Martinez.

The Fried Bubble Gum, which is not actually a gum that one can chew very long or produce bubbles with it, beat seven other new recipes during the 7th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards.

“It does not work to fry bubblegum,” Justin Martinez was quoted as saying, with his winning entry noted to be a bubble gum-flavored marshmallow is dipped in a pink batter, then fried until crispy golden brown, and later decorated with a swirl of icing.

“It took months to figure out how to get the flavor of bubblegum without actually having to fry a piece of bubblegum.” Martinez added, whose award is a replica of an Oscar statue topped with Big Tex’s head.

On the other hand, the four judges composed of Kristi Scales, Joan Waine, Stephen Giles and D-Dallas State Rep Eric Johnson also voted the Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack as the Best Taste food.

As explained by its creator Allan Weiss, it is a buffalo chicken strip coated in flapjack batter, rolled in “jalapeño” bread crumbs and served with a side of syrup.

Meanwhile, below is the list of other food contenders, as summarized from the Big Tex official website, with the Texas State Fair to run starting September 30 up to October 23, 2011.

* Deep Fried Pineapple Upside Down Cake: pineapple rings dipped in cake batter, fried, topped with a glaze made of caramel, sugar and cinnamon and served with a cherry on top.

* Deep Fried Texas Salsa: a medley of jalapeños, roasted garlic, onion, tomato and pepper rolled together, dipped in masa and crunchy tortilla chips, and deep-fried. It’s served with queso.

* El Bananarito: a deep-fried banana rolled in a flour tortilla and topped with whipped cream, powdered sugar, cinnamon and vanilla extract, topped off with hot caramel or chocolate syrup.

* Fried Autumn Pie: a puff pastry filled with pumpkin, cream cheese, powdered sugar and fall spices, deep-fried and rolled in ginger, cinnamon and sugar.

* Hans’ Kraut Ball: browned pork sausage, onion, garlic, sauerkraut, mustard and seasonings rolled into a ball and covered with bread crumbs, then deep-fried and served with spicy mustard, raspberry chipotle or ranch.

* The Walking Taco: seasoned hamburger meat, lettuce, onion, fresh tomato, grated cheese, sour cream and salsa served in a nacho cheese-flavored Doritos bag.
