The treasure trove, reportedly worth over a hundred thousand dollars, was overlooked for over two centuries.

Höls found the ancient treasure inside a wooden box kept in the Passau‘s historic state library archive. Majority of the dozens of coins found were made of silver.

According to the 43-year-old German, she did not know that what she found was a treasure. Library Head Markus Wennerhold said that Höls‘ discovery of the 172 pieces of ancient coins were a “real bonanza.” Wennerhold believes that the coin collection belonged to a prince-bishop of Passau.

The Bavarian city library is currently preparing for its 400th anniversary.
