According to reports, a Pontiac Sunfire struck a 300-pound bear which threw the bear through the air and hit a Nissan Pathfinder in the opposing westbound lane.

The driver of the Pathfinder, reported to be a 25-year-old Gatineau woman, and a passenger, a 40-year-old Ottawa man did not survive the impact. Meanwhile, the occupants of the Sunfire, reported to be 2 Gatineau males aged 19 and 23, were not hurt.

This incident happened in Highway 148, about 50 kilometers nothwest of Ottawa last Monday, June 6, 2011, reports said.

Collisions between vehicles and animals were said to be common in Canada. However, an incident involving a bear which claimed the lives of two people is really rare, local police spokesman Martin Fournel reportedly said.

“It’s a first, there’s no doubt about that,” Fournel was quoted saying.
