First Filipina White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford featured at CNN Talk Asia (September 2010)

Cristeta Comerford, the first Filipina executive chef in White House was featured in CNN Talk Asia last September 1, 2010.

This interview talked about the cooking journey from way back from her mother’ kitchen in the Philippines to her becoming the executive chef for the most powerful man in the world.

Comerford, now in her 40s says that she started to show interest in cooking at the age of 9. But it was her father who pushed Cristeta to get a Culinary Arts course at the University of the Philippines.

In her early 20s, Cristeta Comerford migrated to the US, and worked for a couple of restaurants and hotels.

In 2005, she was hired as an assistant chef in the White House under the administration of Bill Clinton.

In 2005, she was promoted to executive chef in 2005 by then US First Lady Laura Bush. When Barrack Obama was elected president in 2008, Cristeta Comerford was retained in her post.

For 15 years that she has been cooking inside the White House, she had served three America’s First Families such as Clinton, Bush, and now for the Obama family.

She has also served dishes for other important leaders in the world including Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

During the interview, CNN Talk Asia host Hala Gorani asked Comerford about her most memorable experience inside the White House.

Although Comerford said that she has a lot of them in mind, the executive chef sited one; which was the Governors’ Dinner last year.

“It was (First Lady Michelle) Obama’s first formal dinner at the White House. So, for me, it was very special because it was the start of our representation of her.” Comerford explains.

“It’s very humbling for me to be in this position right now, to serve the First Family. Coming from a third world country, to be here serving the most powerful man in the world is a big thing.”
