Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band from Northern Ireland was crowned as the 2011 World Pipe Band Champion last August 13, 2011 held in Glasgow Green, according to reports by several international news sites.

Simon Fraser University from Canada was the runner up, and Scottish Power got the third place.

Based on reports, the championship was organized by Glasgow Life on behalf of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association and Glasgow City Council. It was supported by Event Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.

“It was a great privilege to be chieftain and I’ve enjoyed many wonderful performances. The Worlds are a major event for the city and so many people travelled here for these championships and they have enjoyed a day that will live long in the memory”, Glasgow Lord Provost Bob Winter, the chieftain of the event said in a statement.

The event, which has been held in Glasgow for more than 60 years, drew its audience from all over the world.

Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band was named in honour of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, reports said.

Recent reports also mentioned that the band, though its philosophy has been competition-based since its inception over 65 years ago, also performs at concerts, festivals, radio and television appearances, recording sessions and civil and social functions.
