According to a press release published on the FDA’s official website, L&M Companies, Inc. of Raleigh, North Carolina is issuing a voluntary recall of cucumbers due to potential risk of being contaminated with Salmonella.

As noted in the announcement, one lot of whole cucumbers (or 1590 cartons) was affected by the recall, in which there were no reported related illnesses.

The affected lot was known to have been harvested in South Florida last March 29, and USDA’s Quick Reference for Market Inspectors told the report that cucumber is usually considered safe-to-eat within 10-14 days after harvest.

Meanwhile, the affected product was directly distributed by L&M Companies between March 30th and April 7th to wholesalers in nine US states.

Among them are New York (200 cartons), Florida (591 cartons), Illinois (139 cartons), Indiana (30 cartons), Tennessee (15 cartons), Mississippi (420 cartons), Nebraska (92 cartons), Texas (2 cartons) and Wyoming (101 cartons).

However, the company understands the possibility that these cucumbers may have been sold to other states by wholesalers which is why a nationwide recall is being announced as a safety precaution.

Apparently, this cucumber recall came after FDA informed L&M Companies that a random sampling test of the goods from a cooler at Four Seasons Produce of Central Florida, Inc. last April 13 resulted to have been contaminated with Salmonella.

The noted cucumbers are packed in bulk cartons and marked Nature’s Delight, in which the only one lot number is affected and was identified to Lot # PL-RID-002990 that can be seen on the side of the carton.

With this, the company said it is now coordinating with FDA to inform distributors and customers, as the public is being advised not to consume the recalled products and inform the place of purchase instead.

For more information about this recall, the consuming public is being advised to call L&M Companies at 919-981-8003, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (EST).

The company however noted that messages left at the given over the April 22-24 weekend will be retrieved and calls will be returned.
