Facebook Places: Allows users to let friends know where they are

Facebook Placesis a new application for mobile phones that allows Facebook users to let their friends know where they are. It will provide a real-time update of where they are and what they are doing, wherever they are.

This includes telling their friends the movies they are actually watching or a cool place they wish to recommend to enjoy a picnic. They can also “tag” friends who are in the same location, either by way of a photo or a status update.

United States Facebook users began using this application last Wednesday, where more than 150 million access the service on a mobile device, Facebook company said.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg did not disclose how much money Facebook will make from the service. The company is not yet offering advertising on the service, but advertisers are flocking to Facebook that may bring in as much as $1.4 billion in revenue in 2010.

Apparently, Facebook is now being seen as competitive threat to Google, with each company jockeying for eyeballs and dollars. People these days spend more time socializing with their friends on pages that Google cannot crawl, which means they spend less time searching for different websites on search engines and clicking on their ads.

Although the service is currently available in the US only, Facebook announced that the new application will also be available to other countries in the coming months.
