As of this writing, the free Facebook Messenger app for iPhone at the Apple iTunes Store has now 4+ stars out of 5 with a 1094 rating despite the fact that it was only launched on Tuesday.

Facebook, now with more than 750 million users worldwide, said that the free Facebook Messenger app was made available at iTunes in the US only; with other parts in the world not yet available.

“So today, we’re introducing Messenger, a new mobile app that simplifies how messaging works, and gives you a faster way to message friends and small groups.” Facebook engineer Lucy Zhang wrote on Facebook blog.

Messenger is a separate app, so it only takes one click to get to your messages or send a new one.” Zhang added, noting that Facebook messages are being delivered through notifications and texts.

While Facebook seemed to be successful on their start to complete with RIM Blackberry Messenger (BBM), some Facebook users were not pleased with the release of this free Facebook Messenger app.

On a post at Information Week’s “The Brain Yard” on Wednesday, Robert Strohmeyer wrote an article entitled “5 Reasons You Don’t Need Facebook Messenger“, noting that it may not be a smart choice.

Among the five reasons Strohmeyer mentioned include its being a redundant app since there is already a Facebook app for iPhone which was launched last July.

Facebook Messenger app was also noted to be a distraction in any device since IM users already have other IM accounts such as YM and Google Chat; while online security issue was also a big concern.
