Singer Eric Clapton owns an abstract painting of German artist Gerhard Richter, which was sold in auction at Sotheby’s in London for more than £21.3 million (more than $34 million) on Friday, October 12, 2012. It also set a new record for being the most expensive painting by a living artist sold in an auction.

According to Guardian this Saturday, the Gerhard Richter painting called Abstraktes Bild was bought for £21,321,250 (or around $34.27 million) to an anonymous buyer. Sotheby’s earlier estimated the artwork to be sold between £9 million and £12 million. The 1994 oil painting was sold within 5 minutes of bidding.
“The combination of outstanding provenance and gold-standard quality in this sublime work by this blue-chip artist made for an historic auction moment.” Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director and head of the sale, was quoted in the report, with Richter known to be the current top-selling living artist in the world.
“Gerhard Richter‘s international appeal as one of the hottest contemporary artists was once again confirmed this evening.” Branczik added, with the sale reportedly beating an earlier Richter painting sold in an auction in New York last May, which was worth over £13.5 million (around $21.7 million).
As noted in the report, Richter‘s paintings that were sold at auction back in 2011 reached a total of £124.5 million (or $200 million), based on the record of auction tracker Artnet. This is more than what any other living artists have sold, and more than what the combined sales of paintings by deceased artists sold that year.
Richter, 80, was born in Dresden, Saxony in Germany but lives in Cologne. His artworks include abstract and photorealistic paintings, photographs and glass pieces, and notably following the examples of Picasso and and Jean Arp. His 1967 “5 Doors II” oil painting was sold at Christie’s auction last Thursday for $3.4 million.
Clapton, 67, reportedly bought the 225 cm by 200 cm (88 ½ inches by 78 3/4 inches) Abstraktes painting back in 2001 in New York, also at Sotheby’s. It was among the three Richter paintings he bought for $3.4 million. Besides being a music icon, he is also known to be an art collector.
