As noted at US news sites on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, the Elizabeth Taylor collection auction, which was held on Tuesday night at Christie’s in New York, was composed of 80 lots.
“It’s one of the most extraordinary auctions that Christie’s has ever had and a testament to the affection for Elizabeth Taylor worldwide,” Christie’s Americas President Marc Porter was quoted at the New York Post.
Among the notable Elizabeth Taylor gems that were sold that night include diamonds, pearls, rubies and gold from “The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor“, which reportedly have set records before the event ended.
Apparently, the highest price for a single item of the Elizabeth Taylor collection went to “La Peregrina“, a 16th-century pearl on a necklace given to her in 1969 by then husband Richard Burton.
According to Christie’s, the necklace designed by Cartier was estimated to be sold between $2 and $3 million but was bought for $11.8 million, which was noted to have set a world record for a pearl jewel auction.
On the other hand, the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, a 33.19-carat Asscher-cut D, also a gift from Burton, was sold for $8.8 million, which was earlier expected to sell between $3 million to $5 million. The sale was said to have set world auction record for an Indian jewel.
The heart-shaped Taj Mahal diamond, which Burton gave to Taylor on her 40th birthday in 1972, is being believed to be originally owned Emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj in memory of his late, beloved wife Mumtaz-i-Mahal.
The namesake jewel was bought by Daniel Pang, a representative for Korean hotel conglomerate E-Land, in which the precious gem is being expected to be put on display at its flagship Seoul hotel.
In addition, a ruby and diamond ring, which was also a Burton‘s Christmas gift to Taylor in 1968, was sold for $4.2 million while ear pendants that Taylor designed herself fetched $1.4 million.
