According to British news sites late last week, the four-year old cat became extremely rich after her widow owner passed away nearly three weeks ago left him all her wealth and fortune.

As noted in the reports, a woman named Maria Assunta married a property tycoon but became widow at an early age and had no children. She later adopted the stray cat and became her favorite pet.

Assunta, 94, wrote a will back in November 2009 that her “entire estate” will go to Tommaso and asked her lawyers to “identify an animal welfare association or group to which to leave the inheritance and will look after the cat.

Apparently, Assunta, who has no other relatives, earlier met a nurse named Stefania in a park, who also happens to be a cat-lover like her and was quoted at Guardian, saying “I go to her house so her cat could play with Tommaso“.

Anna Orecchioni, one of the old lady’s lawyers, told the Rome daily Il Messaggero that they did not find the appropriate animal shelter as wished by Assunta for her cat Tommaso and turned to Stefania instead.

“We’re convinced that Stefania is the right person to carry out the old lady’s wishes. She loves animals just like the woman she devoted herself to right up until the end.” Orecchioni was quoted at Telegraph, which the Italian law states that animals cannot inherit directly.

“I promised her that I would look after the cat when she was no longer around. She wanted to be sure that Tommaso would be loved and cuddled.” The nurse was quoted on the report.

Tommaso and Stefania are reportedly now living with another cat outside Rome at an undisclosed address for safety reasons realizing the wealth the cat inherited and the news has been widely spread.

Meanwhile, Tommaso was said to be only among the the world’s richest cat, with Guardian noting that the richest cat ever was thought to be named Blackie, who inherited £9 million ($14 million) by his reclusive British owner in 1988.
