Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire from the Philippines wins via unanimous technical decision against South African boxer Simpiwe Vetyeka in a boxing fight held in Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macau on Saturday, May 31, 2014.
Donaire suffered a cut on his left eye after an accidental headbutt on Round 1. Donaire managed to score an official knockdown on the fourth round. After the fourth round, it was determined that Donaire‘s left eye was too swollen for him to continue.
The fight was stopped and judges went to the scorecards as the fight was considered an official contest because it went for full four rounds.
The final tallies were misread by ring announcer Lupe Contreras as 49-46 when it should be 39-36 for all 3 judges. Donaire was declared the winner, and is now considered a five-division champion.
During the post-fight interview, Donaire was dissatisfied with the outcome and said that he will give a rematch to Vetyeka. “I want to give him a rematch to Vetyeka. I cannot take the victory of this unfinished business. I have tremendous respect for them,” Donaire said on the interview.
