According to a press release by Lionsgate as obtained by Deadline.com on Monday, August 8, 2011, they will produce the “Dirty Dancing” remake and Kenny Ortega will be directing the said film.

Ortega, who also directed the Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It” as well as “High School Musical“, choreographed Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey on the original film back in 1987.

“Amazingly it has been almost 25 years since the original film was released, but the fans remain legion, and engaged more than ever with a brand that is special and vital to them.” Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake said on the report.

“We believe that the timing couldn’t be better to modernize this story on the big screen, and we are proud to have Kenny Ortega at the helm.” Drake added, with Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Development and Production President Alli Shearmur overseeing the said project.

“The opportunity to direct Dirty Dancing is like returning home for me. Growing up in the 60’s on the dance floor helped define me as a person and as an artist.” Kenny Ortega was quoted on the report.

“I am looking forward to assembling a great creative team and an exciting cast to bring Dirty Dancing to the screen for a new generation.” Ortega added, who thanked Eleanor Bergstein, the writer and co-producer of the original film, for choosing him to be its choreographer.
