As noted at local news sites on Saturday, August 18, 2012, Secretary Jesse Robredo was on his way home to Naga from a meeting in Cebu that afternoon when the incident happened. He went missing since then, but his aide was found alive and was rescued from the crash site.
According to reports, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines head William Hotchkiss confirmed that the small plane, a Piper Seneca, boarding the DILG secretary and three others, left Mactan to Naga, adding that an emergency has been reported. The condition of his two other companions, including the pilot, are not yet known.
“Nag-emergency call that they are going to have an emergency landing sa Masbate City Airport pero nag-crash ang plane about 150 meters away from the airport , nag-crash sa dagat,” Masbate Vice Governor Vince Revil was quoted telling to ABS-CBN‘s news cast “TV Patrol: Weekend.”
Meanwhile, Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas reportedly said that the plane carrying Secretary Robredo encountered engine trouble and attempted to make an emergency landing but failed; and Abrazado said that the plane was broken into half when it touched the ground.
As of this writing, the Philippine Navy, Coast Guard and some fishermen are joining hands in the search and rescue operation. The wing of the plane was reportedly found, and prayers are now being requested for the safety of the DILG secretary.
