As noted at local news on Tuesday morning, Secretary Mar Roxas said that Robredo‘s body was found at 7:45 a.m. (local time) that morning inside the fuselage of the small Piper plane, around 180 feet deep, 800 meters from the shore off Masbate, along with the bodies of the two pilots, Capt. Jessup Bahinting and Nepalese Kshitiz Chand.
Last Saturday afternoon, DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo was announced missing, along with three others, his aide named Jun Abrazado, after the Piper Seneca small plane carrying them crashed near the coast of Masbate. Abrazado was found alive and has been rescued, and search and rescue operation immediately followed.
As announced by Roxas, divers found the plane’s fuselage around 7:30 a.m. and found three bodies, with Robredo‘s body identified at 8:15 a.m. and was brought to shore at 8:40 a.m.; adding that President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III (PNoy) already informed Atty. Maria Leonor Gerona-Robredo, wife of the DILG secretary.
“The president was very quiet, he sought absolute confirmation.” Roxas was quoted as saying during his press briefing, noting the PNoy made sure that Mrs. Robredo had someone beside her that time and he decided to personally talk to her about the discovery.
Roxas said that it was lead American technical diver Matthew Caldwell who was the first to identify Robredo after he was told of what the DILG secretary last wore when he went missing, adding that the small plane was was found inverted. The two pilots were in the deepest part of the cockpit and their bodies are now being recovered.
Robredo, 54, was appointed by President Noynoy Aquino as DILG secretary on July 9, 2010. He was elected mayor of Naga City in 1988 at the age of 29, making him the youngest mayor in the country. He was also the first Filipino mayor to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service in 2000.
