Diet Coke beats Pepsi as No. 2 Top US Soda in 2010 as Regular Coke Retains Top Spot

Diet Coke has taken the second spot in the US soda market by selling about 927 million cases in 2010, according to a report by Beverage Digest on Thursday, March 17, 2011.

Regular Coca-Cola retains the number one position as the top soft drink in the US with sales of about 1.6 billion cases.

Coca-Cola and Pepsi has been wrestling the No. 2 spot for decades now.

There are now four sugar-free soda in the top 10 list, and these include diet versions of : Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew and Dr Pepper.

US soft drink sales has dropped over the past six years as soda drinkers now prefer healthier drinks such as juices and tea. Pepsi’s sales has dropped 2.6 percent and has sold 892 million cases in 2010. Coca-Cola has also suffered a 0.5 percent decline in sales last year.

The decline in sales has prompted a vigorous traditional and online advertising by the top two soda producers in the US. Pepsi has recently announced its 100% plant based bottle.
