Dan Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, died on Sunday, October 16, 2011 after getting involved in a 15-car crash on Lap 13 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wheldon was 33.

According to international news reports, the car of Indianapolis 500 winner Wheldon flew over another before hitting the wall just outside turn 2.

Will Power, a championship contenter, and three other drivers were injured in the car mishap.

A five-lap salute was given by the rest of the 34-car drivers in honor of Wheldon.

Reports say that the drivers was concerned about their speed on the tracks as they had been running about 225 mph in practice.

Danica Patrick described the car crash “like a movie scene which they try to make as gnarly as possible.” She added that there “was debris everywhere across the whole track, you could smell the smoke, you could see the billowing smoke on the back straight from the car. There was a chunk of fire that we were driving around. You could see cars scattered.”
