Wiens, together with plastic surgeons Dr. Elof Eriksson and Dr. Bohdan Pomahac had his first public appearance at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, Monday, May 9, 2011 since his 15-hour procedure in March.

The 25-year-old Fort Worth, Texas man said in a statement that, “it feels natural”. I adapted to it very quickly. As time went on … I was able to smell again and breathe through my nose. Every step of the way was amazing.”

Dallas Wiens‘ features were all but burned away leaving him blind after hitting a power line while painting a church in November 2008.

According to surgeons, Wiens‘ sight was not restored by the surgery, and because of badly damaged nerves, he will probably feel partial sensation on his left cheek and the left side of his forehead.

A statement issued by plastic surgeon Bohdan Pomahac said that the transplant’s results were better than he expected. Pohamac is one of the surgeons who performed the operation on Weins.

Dallas Wiens’ surgery was paid by the Department of Defense, which gave the hospital a $3.4 million research grant for five transplants.
