Comelec declares failed Barangay and SK Election on 1,732 villages

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) declares failed Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Election on 1,732 villages, as reported on today on various local news sties.

According to the news, Comelec said that out of 42,025 barangays wherein the Barangay and SK election should be held today, October 25, 1,732 areas or 4.12 percent of the villages nationwide was postponed or considered as ‘failure to function’.

As Comelec Election and Barangay Affairs Department director Teofisto Elnas explained to local news, ‘failure to function’ means the election did not start before 12 noon due to late arrival of election materials or severe damage caused by Typhoon Juan.

As of 11:30 am this morning, National Election Monitoring Action Center was said to have reported that at least 1,599 barangays were declared included in the postponement of the Barangay and SK elections.

But while Director Elnas was not able to release a complete list of the affected villages at once, Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento reportedly said the list include barangays in Catanduanes, Albay, and Marawi City.

Some areas in Regions I, II, III, and VI were included in the list where the Barangay and SK election are considered as failure, Comelec said

However, Region V was said to have the most areas that had a failure of election, in which at least 1,433 barangays were affected by the postponement of the elections due to late and non-availability of election materials.

As Comelec reported to the news, special elections will be held in these barangays tomorrow, October 26, from 7 am to 7 pm.
