Coffeemaker recall 2012: Mr. Coffee recalls 600,700 coffeemakers in US and Canada due to burn hazard

Mr. Coffee announced on Thursday, August 30, 2012 a voluntarily recall affecting 600,700 coffeemakers in US and Canada due to burn hazard, which has been already coordinated with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). There are 12 model numbers affected, as listed below.

According to CPSC on its official website that day, the recalled coffeemakers, which were manufactured in China, involves 520,000 units sold in the United States and 80,700 in Canada; and the importer was Sunbeam Products Inc., doing business as Jarden Consumer Solutions (JCS), based in Boca Raton, Florida.

CPSC noted that steam pressure inside the recalled coffeemakers that can force the brewing chamber to open and eject hot coffee grounds and water, increasing the risk of burn hazard of users. JCS said that there are now 164 reports related to the recall, including 59 reports in the US and two injured in Canada.

As noted in the report, the affected models of the Mr. Coffee Single Cup Brewing System coffeemakers are BVMC-KG1, BVMC-KG1A-001, BVMC-KG1-WM-001, BVMC-KG1-001, BVMC-KG1-BEA, BVMC-KG1R-001, BVMC-KG1-044, BVMC-KG1BP-PAL, BVMC-KG1R-006, BVMC-KG1A, BVMC-KG1-WM, and BVMC-KG1W-001.

The recalled coffeemaker, as shown in the photo below, comes in black with silver, red, or white trim. It is about 11 inches tall, and has a Brew Now /Off button and a removable drip tray as well. The water tank is located on top of the unit towards the back, while the model number can be seen on the bottom of the brewer.

Mr. Coffee said that the items were sold in merchandisers across the US, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Brandsmart, JC Penney, Kmart, Lowe’s, Target and Walmart, and at www.MRCoffee.com from September 2010 through August 2012 for between $60 and $80.
