Chino Roque is the first Filipino astronaut to be flying into space by 2015 after being chosen as one of the 23 winners of the tickets to space with Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) under a project of Axe Apollo body spray makers.
The winners were announced at the Axe Apollo Space Academy on Thursday, December 5, in the garden at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral in Florida.
According to a report from Rappler, Chino Roque competed against 28,000 aspiring astronauts in the Philippines, which was narrowed down to 400, then 50, and finally down to 3. The 3 finalists from the Philippines underwent one week of astronaut training, together with more than 100 participants from over 60 countries.
In the end, Chino Roque emerged as one of the 23 winners.
“Right now I’m very happy that a lot of people have been showing me their love and support. I feel so blessed and grateful to all of them,” Roque was quoted as saying by Rappler.
Axe Philippines congratulated Roque today thru Facebook, saying: “With his drive to surpass his limits, he emerged victorious and upheld #filipinopride. We salute you Chino Roque. You are an AXE man through and through.”
Chino Roque is a psychology graduate from De La Salle Manila, reports said.
