China iPhone 5 sales reach more than 2 million on its first weekend release, Apple says

The iPhone 5 sales in China have already reached more than 2 million, merely three days after it went on sale in the country. Apple released its iPhone 5 in mainland China last Friday, December 14, 2012, and was made available online and its seven retail stores, resellers, and stores of China Unicom and China Telecom.

According to a post at Apple.com this Monday, December 17, 2012, over 2 million units of iPhone 5 were sold on its first weekend, with the latest iPhone also to be released in more than 100 countries by the end of December this year, and being noted to be the best-selling iPhone ever.

“Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China. China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.” Apple CEO Tim Cook was quoted in the report.

Back in September, AT&T announced that their iPhone 5 sales have set a new iPhone record, noting that that it is now the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever sold. Later, iPhone 5 was also made available in other countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the UK.

Last Friday, iPhone 5 went on sale in 33 more countries including Albania, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Grenada, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, among others.

Apple‘s iPhone 5 is the being dubbed as thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, which key features include having a 4-inch Retina display; an Apple-designed A6 chip, and comes with iOS 6. Its 16GB model now costs $199 at Apple.com, but Walmart is currently offering it for $127 only with a two-year contract.
