China aircraft carrier, the country’s first, is expected to start sailing this summer, according to several international reports on Tuesday, April 12, 2011.

According to the Admiral Robert Willard, Chief of the US Pacific Command, the deployment of China‘s first aircraft carrier will bring a significant “change in perception” in the balance of power in the Asian region. He also put emphasis on China’s massive military build-up that includes the rapid development of ballistic missiles.

However, the impact of China‘s new vessel will still take time as this will entail a long period of development, training and exercises before the carrier becomes operational.

Willard‘s Command in the region has five aircraft carrier strike groups.

China‘s first aircraft carrier was acquired from Ukraine about a decade ago.
