China‘s first aircraft carrier is being built, but not completed, according to Gen. Chen Bingde, China’s General Staff of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in a local newspaper report where he was quoted saying by several websites on June 9, 2011.

According to BBC, the said general confirmed the current construction of China‘s 990-ft refurbished Soviet aircraft carrier. He refused to give a timetable for its completion, but there has been speculation that the vessel was nearly finished.

“The carrier is now being built. It’s not completed. When it is, we’ll say more,” Gen. Chen Bingde told the Hong Kong Commercial Daily newspaper as quoted by several news sites.

Reports said that the aircraft carrier is currently being constructed in the north-east port of Dalian. It was said that the carrier is a remodelled vessel from a defunct Soviet-era carrier formerly named the Varyag which China bought from Ukraine in 1998.

Meanwhile, Telegraph UK said in a report that the aircraft carrier will be launched by the end of June at the earliest. The information was just quoted by the Hong Kong newspaper from anonymous sources.

Furthermore, China’s upcoming carrier was said to be used for training and as a model for a future indigenously-built ship and will not enter other nations’ territories, in accordance to Beijing’s defensive military strategy, reports said.

Here are some photos showing that Chinas aircraft carrier is nearly finished.
