As published at 2011 World Cars Awards’ official website, Chevrolet Volt won the 2011 World Green Car award, which was chosen from an initial entries of 12 new vehicles and went down to top three.

The 2011 World Green Car award was announced in a press conference hosted by Bridgestone Corporation and the New York International Auto Show.

The other two 2011 World Green Car finalists are BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition and the Nissan Leaf, which won as 2011 Car of the Year.

However, the website noted that the 2011 World Green Car should not be confused with the Green Car of the Year award being presented in the US by Green Car Journal.

“The selection of the Volt as the World Green Car is a further proof point of the fuel efficient technologies that are now being offered by the Chevrolet brand around the world,” Chevrolet Marketing Vice President Rick Schiedt said on the report.

“This award, and the others that have preceded it, validate the efforts of the development team to build a truly remarkable vehicle with the potential to transform transportation around the globe.” Schiedt added.

One of the criteria needed to win the 2011 World Green Car award include being introduced in at least one major car market from January 1, 2010 to May 30, 2011, with at least 10 units produced.

Meanwhile, Chevrolet Volt is a hybrid car; a half electric and half gasoline car, which was said to be getting 100 miles per gallon.

According to Chevrolet’s website, this GM model could cost roughly around $40,000 and was also named as 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year.
