British Open Leaderboard Results 2012: Ernie Els Wins Fourth Major

The British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes had a dramatic finish on Sunday, July 22, 2012. Ernie Els won the 141st Open Championship with a one-shot lead over Adam Scott, according to a report by The Open Championship website. It was Els‘ fourth major title of his career.

After ten years of struggle, Els finally won his second British Open and joined Bobby Locke as the second South African to win The Open title at Lytham. Els finished the final round with a two-under-par 68 to snatch the victory from his Australian rival.

Els reportedly trailed Scott by as much as four shots with only five holes left. The South African ended the 2012 British Open with a seven-under-par total of 273.

Scott could have won the tournament but dropped four shots to par over the last four holes and finished the final round with a five over par 75. He ended the tournament at six-under-par.

Before winning his fourth Major title, Els last victory was his two US Opens and one British Open between 1994 and 2002.

After failing to notch his first major title, Scott explained that “It was a very sloppy finish by me.” The Australian added that he “played so well all week. I wasn’t even really out of position but I managed to get myself in some trouble and couldn’t make the putts to get out of it the last four holes.”

Tiger Woods and early tournament leader Brandt Snedeker finished the final round with a 73 and 74 respectively to end the the 2012 Open on three under par 277.
