Ryoji Yagi, a Tsukiji fish market official, revealed that the 222-kilogram (489-pound) bluefin tuna, caught off Oma in Aomori prefecture in northeastern Japan, was sold for 155.4 million yen or $1.76 million.

Kyodo Agency reported that the world record tuna will later be served as sushi and sashimi by winning bidder, Kiyoshi Kimura. He is the President of Kiyomura Co. that operates several restaurant chains that include the famous Sushi-Zanmai restaurant.

Last January 6, 2012, Kimura set a record for a bluefin tuna when he provided the highest bid of $736,000 during the New Year‘s auction.

As the bluefin tuna keeps registering new record highs in an auction, its world-wide stocks however, is reportedly on the downtrend over the past 15 years due to uncontrolled fishing.
