A bizarre creature in ancient cocoon was found recently by researchers in Antartica, according to a Live Science report on Saturday, December 8, 2012.

Researchers say that a “slimy mucous cocoon” may have been released by the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis about 200 million years ago.

The Live Science report say that a bell animal similar to the genus Vorticella was discovered inside the cocoon. The teardrop-shape creature reportedly measures about 25 microns, estimated to be about the width of some human hairs. Its body has a “tightly coiled stalk” about twice its length, reportedly used to attach to substrates.

Similar with other eurkaryotes, the bizarre creature reportedly has a “large horseshoe-shaped nucleus inside the main body.”

According to researchers, the bell animal may have lived during the warmer Late Triassic Period. During this time, the Earth has more rain forests along the Transantarctic Mountain Range.
