Birds of America is one of the best preserved editions of Audubon‘s 19th-century masterpiece. It is a rare blend of art, natural history and craftsmanship as reported by several websites.

The book is more than two feet wide and three feet tall. It contains about 435 hand-colored illustrations of birds by Audubon himself, originally published in 1827.

Birds of America was sold in a Sotheby’s auction on Tuesday in London. The final selling price was $11.5 million to an anonymous collector bidding by telephone, the auction house said.

Pom Harrington, owner of the Peter Harrington Rare Book Firm in London said that the Birds of America “is the most important natural history book for America. It screams Americana and it is the greatest book on American heritage”.
