A pair of bionic hands was created by Sun Jifa for himself when he lost his hands after a homemade bomb exploded, according to a Daily Mail report on Tuesday, August 14, 2012.

The 51-year-old Chinese was able to survived the bomb explosion supposedly intended for fishing. His desire to work on the family farm motivated him to create his own metal hands.

Jifa, from Guanmashan, Jilin province, Northern China, took eight years to finally fit his new pair of homemade artificial hands.

The Chinese‘s bionic hands, with wires and pulleys inside, reportedly can grip and hold objects. However, his metal hands are heavy and absorbs heat during summer and winter.

In a statement provided to Daily Mail, Jifa explained that “I survived but I had no hands and I couldn’t afford to buy the false hands the hospital wanted me to have – so I decided to make my own.”

According to Jifa, he controls his bionic hands “with movements from my elbows and I can work, love normally and feed myself just like anyone else.” Jifa added that “The only drawback is that steel is quite heavy so they’re tiring to wear and get hot or cold in the extremes of summer and winter.”

Reports say that Jifa plans to share his design to other disable individual.
