Billy Crystal announced on Thursday, November 10, 2011 that he will be hosting the Oscars 2012, his ninth time since 1990. He hosted the Oscars in 1990–1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2004.

“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.” Billy Crystal (@BillyCrystal) tweeted a few hours ago.

In a post by the Academy on their official website, this was confirmed by producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer, who said he is eager to see Billy Crystal hosting the Oscars again.

“With Billy, we’re moving forward with one of the greatest hosts in Oscar history. His return to the Oscars is, in a sense, a celebration.” Mischer said on the report, with Crystal replacing Eddie Murphy, who quit earlier along with Oscars producer Brett Ratner after a controversy over his comments.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Billy back to the Oscar stage. He’s a comic legend and Oscar icon, and it feels good to have him back where he belongs.” Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak was quoted on the press release.

“Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage. I am thrilled to be back there. Actually, I am doing this so that the young woman in my pharmacy will stop asking me my name when I pick up my prescriptions,” the 63-year old funnyman was quoted in the report.

Billy Crystal does not have the highest number of Oscars hosted. Bob Hope had 18 Academy Awards presentations, from 1940 to 1978.

The 84th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California. It will be aired via ABC Network in the US and in other countries worldwide.
