Belarus subway station explosion, at least 7 killed, dozens wounded

An explosion occurred on a subway station in Minsk, Belarus’ capital on Monday, April 11, 2011, and reports say 7 people were confirmed dead and dozens were wounded.

As reported at RIA Novosti news agency, a loud explosion struck at the Oktyabrskaya metro subway station, in the capital of Belarus, on Monday, at around 5: 55 p.m (local time).

Apparently, the area was near the office of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who was said to have rushed to the scene at once.

Around 12 emergency vehicles arrived at the area, and rescue workers immediately brought the victims to the nearest hospitals, where around 40 people were wounded.

As told by the witnesses to local news, smoke appeared on the the said subway station and a portion of its ceiling collapsed after the explosion.

As of this writing, authorities did not provide any further details about the incident as thorough investigation is still on going.
