Answering the question, “What will I do if I become Miss International?”, Santiago impressed the judges when she answered: “The whole world saw how my country suffered. One by one, other countries helped. You have opened my heart and eyes on what we can do to help each other. I will work to sustain the spirit of sympathy and spirit of hope. As long as we work together, there is hope.”
“This is my dream. Thank you Japan for giving it to me,” Santiago was quoted as saying after winning the title. “I’m going to use my crown and my title to help the victims… So this is actually for my province, and this is for the Philippines,” Santiago added.
This was the fifth time that the Philippines won the title since 1960, reports said.
Miss Netherlands, Nathalie den Dekker was the first runner up and Miss New Zealand, Lorena Hermida took the second runner up.
